How do people in Indonesia and the Netherlands view the role of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, the great man behind the VOC? He establishes a monopoly on the spice trade, sparing nothing and no one. The VOC's financial success took some time to materialise. Substantial profits only came 30 years after the issue of the first shares in 1602.
