My 1997 Geo metro was making a small knocking / rattling sound when I went over gravel. It turns out it was my steering rack. Hopefully this video helps you diagnose your problem!

Just to clarify this is a manual rack with no power assist. Commonly found on older smaller vehicles. However checking this part of the rack for play will be similar for almost any vehicle.
