(4 Dec 2018) President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela vowed Monday his country would continue to export gold in defiance of American sanctions.
He was speaking in Caracas after talks with visiting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Turkey bought 900 million US dollars of gold from Venezuela in the first nine months of this year, and Maduro made clear he won't let Washington get in the way of further trade with Turkey or anywhere else.
"Whatever Venezuela produces, it has a right to sell in the world," Maduro said.
Erdogan, for his part, heaped praise on Venezuela's embattled socialist leader, and said Turkey would decide for itself who it would choose as friends.
The two leaders signed a series of trade agreements during the visit, the first by a Turkish leader to Venezuela.
The United States and several European nations have imposed sanctions on Maduro's administration in an attempt to pressure Venezuela into returning to democracy.
