PM Narendra Modi arrives in Kuwait, to hold talks on defense, security
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Kuwait marks a historic diplomatic engagement, being the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi in 1981. The trip focused on strengthening defense and security cooperation, as well as discussions on a bilateral investment treaty and a defense cooperation agreement. Modi emphasized the goal of establishing a futuristic partnership, highlighting the historical ties and mutual interests in peace and prosperity in the West Asia region.
India is a vital trading partner for Kuwait, with bilateral trade reaching USD 10.47 billion in the financial year 2023-24. Additionally, the Indian expatriate community makes up about 30% of Kuwait's workforce, underscoring the importance of this relationship and the visit's role in solidifying ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), chaired by Kuwait.
During his stay, Modi also had a touching meeting with 101-year-old Mangal Sain Handa, a former Indian Foreign Service officer, facilitated by a social media appeal from Handa's granddaughter. Upon his arrival, Modi engaged closely with the Indian community, demonstrating the significance of diaspora relations.
At the "Hala Modi" event in Kuwait, Prime Minister Modi praised the contributions of Indians, noting their recognition by the local government. He expressed gratitude to the Kuwaiti leadership for supporting the Indian community and reaffirmed India's commitment to safeguarding the interests of Indian workers abroad. Modi also highlighted initiatives like the E-Migrate portal, aimed at enhancing the welfare of Indian expatriates in Kuwait and the Gulf region.
