Learn how to knit short row heels that fit beautifully – even for high insteps! The deep shadow heel combines the anatomical fit of a classic heel flap and gusset with the ease and clean look of a short row heel. The heel is perfect for adding a pop of contrast colour, requires almost no counting and can easily be subbed into your favourite top-down sock pattern.
The heel is worked back and forth on half of the stitches, leaving the stitches on the other side of the sock waiting on the needles. You’ll work the heel in two sections: in the first you’ll work progressively shorter rows until approx a third of the stitches remain in the centre, then you’ll begin working longer rows until all of the stitches in the heel have been worked again. On the first section, at each turning point, you’ll work an increase to create a “twin stitch”. On the second half of
the heel you’ll combine adding a new stitch to the original set and decreasing the ones made on the previous turn to prevent holes.
Unlike most short row heels you’ll end with more stitches than you started with. When the heel is complete you’ll return to working in the round and decrease these additional stitches with a gusset on either side of the foot.
