After almost 14 years on the cobbles playing Michelle Connor, the time arrived for Kym Marsh's final scenes on Coronation Street. And Corrie fans were in tears as Michelle left quietly in a back of a taxi for a new start in Ireland. Michelle's world was rocked just days after the death of her ex fiance Robert Preston when she found out that creepy hotelier Ray Crosby was the secret buyer of the bistro formerly run by her and Robert. The former manageress headed to the bistro to hand over the keys to the new owner. When it turned out to be Ray, who had previously tried it on with her, a grief-stricken Michelle set about smashing up the place until her best friend Carla Connor ordered her to stop. "You've done this out of sheer pettiness," she screamed at Ray. But just as it looked like she was refusing to leave, she thrust him the keys and flounced off to the pub. And moments later, after being comforted by Carla, she was seen in the Rovers all smiles with her family and friends, preparing to start a new life in Ireland. "I am crying SO much at Michelle driving off," said one fan on . "I’m crying already omg the way Carla spoke so softly to Michelle," said another. "What a great exit for Michelle," tweeted another viewer. Kym shot to fame in 2000 on ITV reality show Popstars, eventually becoming a singer in the band formed from the series Hear’Say. She made her debut on the ITV soap in 2006 as singer Michelle who became a barmaid and later landlady of the Rovers Return. The actress wanted to explore new roles, leaving the door open for her character's return. Kym said previously in a statement about leaving Corrie: “When I was lucky enough to be offered four episodes on Coronation Street I could never in my wildest dreams have thought I’d be here 13 years later. “It’s been an incredibly difficult decision but it feels like the right time for me to take a break from the show and explore some other roles. “But this isn’t the last you’ve heard of Michelle Connor, she’ll be back! I can’t wait to see what the writers have in store for the future.” After the heartbreaking loss of her baby boy at 23 weeks of pregnancy, and discovering that her ex husband Steve McDonald had secretly fathered a son with Leanne Battersby, Michelle found a shoulder to cry on with Robert and romance blossomed. But she was unaware that Robert, played by Tristan Gemmill, was leading a double life and was also engaged to her love rival Vicky Jefferies who went on to have the baby he longed for. Tragically Robert was shot during a dramatic Christmas Day siege on the cobbles and he never got to see his newborn son.
