A collision on Monday evening between two passenger vessels off Hong Kong left 38 people dead. The Lamma IV was carrying Hong Kong Electric Company employees and their families to a fireworks display on Hong Kong Island when it was hit by the Sea Smooth passenger ferry which was traveling from Hong Kong to Lamma Island. The Lamma IV sank within minutes of the impact trapping many of the 124 people on board inside. The damaged Sea Smooth made it safely to shore.
The captain and crew of both vessels were arrested for "endangering the safety of others at sea" and later bailed.
This animation explains why the Lamma IV may have sunk so quickly.
