Min-maxing, a tabletop role-playing game strategy of maximizing desirable skills, powers and abilities of a player's character and minimizing traits they don't think they will need. This results in excessively powerful for one specific task, but generally under powered in other facets of the character.

Game designers tend to dislike min-maxing as it reduces variety in their games as players force extreme specialization. Min-maxing has a history of controversy among the tabletop role-playing game community. Min-maxing usually affects the difficulty balance of a game or rule system, causing some game sessions to become too easy or too difficult. Dungeon Masters usually have a goal of providing a reasonable and enjoyable challenge level throughout for all standard character types.

Players are more likely to rely heavily on that one thing they're good at to solve all situations in the game when their character is min-maxed. Game designers often attempt to limit the success of min-maxing by including challenges in their games that cannot all be met by any one specialized character build.

Min-maxing means the player sees their character in starkly mechanical terms rather than as a fictional person. Thus, a min-maxing player may be less likely to roleplay their character or to engage with the game's story or other characters.

Historically, min-maxing arose in Dungeons & Dragons. In D&D, min-maxing carries a pejorative edge to some players as they may be vastly overshadowing their peers in their area of expertise, poorly suited to roleplaying, and disrupting the game's balance. On the other hand, to players who primarily see and enjoy games as creative optimization problems, min-maxing is the only fun way to play games.
