Sauron, one of the most formidable Maiar, was originally an apprentice of Aulë the Smith, one of the Valar. However, he was later corrupted and enticed by Morgoth to become his most trusted lieutenant, known as Gorthaur during the Wars of Beleriand in the first age. Skilled in shapeshifting, Sauron assumed various forms, including that of a werewolf, a serpent, and a vampire. In the Second Age, disguised as Annatar, he tricked the Elves of Eregion into crafting the Rings of Power while secretly forging the One Ring to rule them all. Despite his immense power, Sauron is not particularly skilled in combat, relying instead on his cunning and charisma to manipulate and almost plunge Middle-earth into darkness on multiple occasions.
