80 years ago, Paris was liberated after 4 years of Nazi occupation. Lacking the strength to fight, German General Dietrich von Choltitz defied Hitler's order to burn the city to the ground, and the Germans fled as the US 4th Infantry Division and French 2nd Armored Division arrived to join the fight.
Choltitz signed a formal surrender on August 26. And General Charles de Gaulle led a liberation march down the Champs d’Elysees.
