코로나19 어제 506명 신규확진…나흘만에 다시 500명대
We begin with the latest on the COVID-19 in South Korea.
A concerning uptick in the number of new cases over the past 24 hours.
Again, above 500.
Bae Eun-ji starts us off.
South Korea confirmed 506 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday.
It's the first time in four days that the number has topped 500.
Among them, 491 were locally transmitted, 15 from overseas.
More than half the locally transmitted cases came from the greater Seoul area.
But concerns are rising in other cities as well,... as for the first time in two months, they collectively saw more than 200 daily cases.
Cluster infections have popped up nationwide in saunas, kindergartens, and at hospitals.
And as a month has passed since students returned to school,... the prime minister said Wednesday that kids' safety is the number one priority.
"Vaccinations will begin this week, starting with special education teachers and school nurses. We'll do our best to have high school seniors, as well as kindergarten teachers and those who teach first and second graders vaccinated ASAP."
Health authorities are also concerned about the further spread of the virus with Easter and some big by-elections in April.
"The government and the local communities will closely monitor religious services until April 11th to make sure that social distancing measures are kept."
There were two additional deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday... raising the death toll in South Korea to 1-thousand-731.
