The Rhine Falls in Switzerland are Europe's biggest waterfall. It is located about 45 minutes north of Zurich just next to the German border. You can visit the Rhine Falls year round for relatively little to no money at all. The waterfall is about 150m wide and the water drops about 23m. You can visit the northerly side of the river for free. The southerly side with the walk on platform to stand over the flowing water costs CHF 5. Boat tours and access to the rock in the middle cost extra but are a really cool experience.
After your trip you could visit the pretty town of Schaffhausen or hop over the border to Germany to have some hearty lunch. The Rhine river continues to Basel where you can also enjoy its beauty on a later stage of your trip.
