How to Thicken Cheap Economy Gesso
I had a gallon of economy gesso in my studio that had served me well for many years when I used to buy raw canvas and stretch and prime my own canvasses. Nowadays I buy premade canvasses so I really did not want such thin gesso. I would rather have thick gesso to use for fun mixed media effects but it seemed a shame to toss this so here is what I did to make it more useful.
1. Let the gesso sit undisturbed for a couple of months.
2. Use a small cup to scoop out the watery liquid on top. *If this liquid is not sticky you can discard it but keep it handy in a separate bottle until you are done in case your gesso is too thick.
3. After you have removed the surplus water stir the gesso, you should have a much thicker gesso then before. I removed about a quart of water from my gesso!
When you buy economy grade supplies like gesso or paint they often add water and fillers to thin the product to make it more economical. Often times buying artist grade is more cost effective because the paint will go much farther.
Additionally if your gesso won't separate you can always take out a small amount and add a bit of plaster to it as needed for a project, keep in mind that it might be brittle on a flexible surface.
