Many theologians, commentators, and well-meaning students of the bible believe that the seals, trumpets, and bowls are linear events in scripture. In other words - all the seals must occur first, prior to the blowing of the first trumpet. However, this is not the case. The seals and trumpets run parallel to each other and both end with the wrath of God. Note the following:
Examine the events at the opening of the seventh seal:
Rev 8:3-5 - Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.
Now, examine the events at the seventh trumpet:
Rev 11.19 - Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a great hailstorm.
Finally, examine the events at the seventh bowl of wrath:
Rev 16:17-18, 21 -The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since man has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake....And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent:and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. Rev 16:21
In all three instances, the same five distinctive events occur:
(1) Flashes of lightning
(2) Rumblings
(3) Peals of thunder
(4) An earthquake
(5) A great hailstorm.
This is why I no longer depend on the commentaries of men, or theologians with advanced degrees to explain scripture to me. The truth is available to all who humble themselves, and earnestly seek the truth.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2Ti 2:15)
