Nikon FE and FE2 are in the same semi-professional family as Nikon FM, FM2, FM2n,
and FM3a .
These are more compact than the professional single F series, Nikon F to F6. The trend for compaction was started by Olympus OM1 and gradually followed by all other manufacturers, especially Pentax and Canon. Its weight is 590 grams which is exactly the same as the Canon AE-1. But FE was at least 25% more expensive than the consumer-oriented AE-1.
This solid camera has a wonderful and highly intuitive manual mode like the Nikon FM series. But it
adds Aperture priority automatic exposure to its features. That, of course means the shutter speeds are electronically controlled with one backup mechanical shutter speed, in the same way as say Nikon F3. There are several other features which are common with the F3. Nikon FE was more expensive than its companion Nikon FM, presumably because of the additional automation features.
