Here is the original Grandstand theme tune. It was used by BBC television for its premier Saturday afternoon sports programme from its inception in 1958, throughout the 1960s and up until 1971.
The famous opening credits showed a four lens television camera panning to face the viewer, each lens being superimposed with images of a different sport.
The theme tune was called 'News Scoop' by Len Stevens.
This is surely one of the greatest TV themes of all times. Once you've played it it's likely to stick in your head all day!
Of course Grandstand was killed off by subscription channels like Sky which for some reason thought they should do deals with the sports governing bodies and pay them vast sums of money to televise the sport exclusively. Now the public has to pay for what they used to have for free (or at least for the cost of a licence fee)! Is that progress? I don't think so.
