(23 Oct 2014) Two people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up in Quetta on Thursday in an apparent attempt on the life of the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam religious party, according to police.
Party leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who had just finished addressing a rally of thousands of supporters of the Taliban- linked party, survived the attack.
Several people were wounded.
Rehman has previously survived at least two attempts on his life.
The religious party is based in Pakistan but has links with the Taliban in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Rehman's religious schools had been one of the main breeding grounds for the Afghan Taliban.
The suicide bombing was one of a series of attacks in Quetta, which lies in Pakistan's troubled southwestern province of Baluchistan, on Thursday.
Baluchistan is home to Baluch separatist and nationalist groups that have been fighting for autonomy and a greater share of revenues from the region's natural resources.
