*NOTE: While 450 billion tons of carbon have been emitted since the industrial era, exactly what percentage of this was due to soil carbon is difficult to calculate, and could range from as little as 10% to as much as 20%. However total soil carbon losses including the pre-industrial era could represent a larger percentage.
