China and the Philippines traded accusations Monday after two of their Coast Guard ships collided earlier that morning in the South China Sea.
China’s state broadcaster CCTV aired video which it claimed showed the Philippines vessel “deliberately” ramming the Chinese ship despite what it said were “repeated warnings” from Chinese maritime police.
“Despite warnings from the Chinese maritime police vessels, they intentionally rammed the on-site law enforcement vessels of the Chinese maritime police in a dangerous manner, foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.
A spokesperson for the Philippine’s South China Sea task force said two of its Coast Guard vessels had “encountered unlawful and aggressive maneuvers” from the Chinese vessel while on a mission to re-supply personnel stationed on two occupied islands.
The latest flare-up comes after the Philippines and China held crucial talks in July to try to ease tensions following a dramatic incident in the South China Sea in June which sparked concerns of a wider conflict.
