Struan Point was planted by Atholl Estates in 2021 with a combination of native broadleaf trees including Oak, Aspen, Rowan, Birch, Alder as well as a range of conifer trees including Caledonian Scots Pine, Sitka and Norway Spruce. The area enclosed by the 7.5 km fence is roughly 310 hectares and contains over 350,000 planted trees. In addition, Atholl Estates are actively managing an area of approximately 15 hectares of naturally regenerated Birch and Rowan to improve the condition of the Struan Woods SSSI.
Over the next 60 years or so these trees will be monitored by the UK Woodland Carbon Code (WCC), to sequester carbon dioxide.
Malcolm, our Forestry Operations Manager at Atholl Estates, explains how this regeneration will create a balanced, native woodland that will support and enhance local wildlife.
