In Episode 5 of the Kigali City Bike Tour series, we take you on an exciting ride through the neighborhoods of Gahanga, Nyanza Kicukiro, Kicukiro Center, and Sonatube.
Our journey begins at the iconic Gahanga Cricket Stadium, also known as "The Lord's of East Africa”, a state-of-the-art sports facility that has become a landmark in the area. Gahanga Cricket Stadium, a world-class sports facility that can accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. The stadium has become a popular destination for cricket fans, and it has hosted several international tournaments. As we cycle through the stadium, you'll get a chance to appreciate its impressive architecture and learn more about the history of cricket in Rwanda.
As we cycle through Nyanza Kicukiro, we'll pass by the Nyanza Kicukiro Genocide Memorial, a solemn reminder of the tragic events that took place in Rwanda in 1994. The memorial serves as a tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, many of whom lost their lives after the United Nations Peacekeeping Force, Belgian troops, departed the ETO Kicukiro. Refugees were left to face their fate, and this resulted in the loss of many lives in the area, killed by Hutu militia. The memorial is a call for peace and reconciliation, and a reminder to never forget the lessons of the past. Never again!
Next, we'll ride through the bustling commercial area of Kicukiro Center and cross the newly constructed flyover, which has become a major landmark in the city.
Finally, we'll head towards Sonatube, a busy roundabout that serves as a major transportation hub in the city. Here, we pass nearby Silverback Mall, one of the city's premier shopping destinations. We'll also cycling around the statue of traditional dancers, a beautiful piece of art that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Rwanda.
Overall, this bike tour is a perfect way to explore some of the most iconic landmarks and neighborhoods in Kigali while promoting safe and healthy cycling in African cities. It is also an opportunity to remember the tragic events of the past and to honor the lives lost in the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.
