Chichijima has many legacies from WW2 but one of the most impressive is the shipwreck of the Hinko Maru. Now covered in coral and a popular snorkeling site, the Hinko Maru(濱江丸) was a Japanese freighter torpedoed just outside the Futami harbor entrance. On June 4, 1944 intentionally stranded to avoid sinking and allow off-loading near the shore of Sakaiura(境浦) on Chichijima(父島), Bonin Islands(now known as Ogasawara Islands(小笠原諸島)).
The ship was actually stationed at Saipan, but with the imminent US invasion of that island, the Hinko Maru received orders to re-port at Chichijima. During the journey to Chichijima the ship was sighted by the US Navy and eliminated.
