Dr. Michael Beug is a world renowned mycologist with contributions to countless mycological publications, author of many mushroom books, and former Mycology professor at Evergreen State College in
Olympia Washington. He was also the teacher responsible for guiding the early studies of famed mycologists and authors like Jeremy Bigwood, Jonathan Ott, and Paul Stamets.
I, Aaron Hilliard, of Mushroom Wonderland, am also a mycology educator from the Puget sound region, and I had the pleasure of spending time with the professor and getting a tour of his beautiful mountainous property near Trout Lake, Washington. This is a special look into the everyday foraging ground and living space of one of the most influential mycologists of his time. If you’d like to dive a little deeper you can sign up for the 3 part intro to mycology course at the Olympic College in Bremerton. This is a non-credit class for personal enrichment. Aaron instructs the class in person, which covers what fungi is, how it grows, and its relationship to the world around it. The second class covers introduction to wild mushrooms and mushroom identification, and the third class goes over fungi cultivation and the history of mycological sciences and taxonomy. There is usually a foray into the woods for students who have attended the 3 classes. The classes are only offered in person right now, but they may be made into an online version soon.
