Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of talk therapy that is most well known for its efficacy in Borderline Personality Disorder treatment. Despite its popularity for BPD treatment, it has also been found effective for treating other conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Bipolar Disorder, and Eating Disorders like Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder. It also helps more general issues regarding emotion regulation and impulse control.
Although DBT as a full therapy has multiple components, which may be appropriate depending on symptoms, DBT skills are the core component that can be learned through self-help resources. These materials are only meant to teach DBT skills and concepts, so they are not a replacement for therapy, but they can be a great way to supplement therapy or skills groups if you need more than what they offer.
In this video, I break down and review a few popular DBT Self Help Workbooks.
**Edit - When discussing the Self-Directed DBT Skills 3 Month Workbook, I mentioned that it doesn't have the worksheet's available for download, but I was incorrect! There is a QR Code on page 208.
