YOGYAKARTA or JOGJA as it’s known to the locals has an INCREDIBLE FOOD CULTURE so we take you on an INDONESIAN STREET FOOD hunt of some of Jogja’s most traditional, local food. We start our food hunting at the local market (Pasar Lempuyangan) where we eat jenang, a dish made up of different porridges. Jenang is not just a local breakfast food but is presented in various Javanese festivities and thus has a real cultural significance. Served with thin coconut milk in a banana leaf and pincuk (woven vessel used for eating) the porridges are sweet, gloopy and slightly warm in temperature. Made from ingredients such as rice flour, tapioca and sago this is one local dish that is a must eat when in Jogja.
After the market we race over to Mbah Lindu for her famous gudeg. Mbah Lindu has been serving this dish since 1940 and despite being in her 90s still cooks this dish every day although her daughter now runs the stall. Gudeg is young, unripe jackfruit cooked with palm sugar, coconut milk, teak leaf and spices. Gudeg is perhaps Jogja’s most famous dish so you must hunt it down when you’re in town!
After, it’s on to find another Jogja specialty- ayam geprek or smashed chicken with sambal! Diners choose the number of chillies they want in their sambal before the chilli paste is made up and the fried chicken pieces added. The chicken and chilli paste is pounded until all the meat and bones are smashed up before being served with rice and vegetables of your choosing. Tasty!
Our final stop is for Kopi Joss or charcoal coffee. When in Java, you’ve got to drink coffee- it’s thick and rich and when it’s had a hunk of hot charcoal added to it it’s particularly unique!

Gudeg at Mbah Lindu, Jl. Sosrowijayan, Sosromenduran, Gedong Tengen, Kota Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta 55271. Open daily from 5:00am. Go early! We got the last plate at around 9:45am.
Smashed chicken (ayam geprek) at Warung Makan Ayam Geprek Bu Rum 1, Jl. Wulung Lor, Papringan, Caturtunggal, Depok, Mrican, Caturtunggal, Kec. Depok, Kabupaten Sleman, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta 55281. Open 8:00am to 9:00pm.
Charcoal coffee at Kopi Joss Lik Man, Jalan Wongsodirjan, Gedong Tengen, Sosromenduran, Yogyakarta, Kota Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta 55271. Open daily 2:00pm until 3:00am Monday to Saturday, 2:00pm to midnight on Sunday.
