the sonatas in giovanni battista bassani's fifth publication (1688) are representative of italian music just before the turn of the 18th century and the rise of the corelli cult. listen to how the violins talk to one another and mirror each other's tues, as well as how the music shifts dramatically from cheerful and excited to languid and despairing--and then back! this italian taste for drama is what made italian music so popular throughout europe, and it's maybe why we like it too. we especially enjoy the contentment of the fifth section...it's really quite cute :)
