Why will the Social Security disability judge ask you about your driving habits and how should you answer these questions?
As I discuss in this video, disability judges are trying to determine if you have the capacity for simple, entry-level work. They will ask you about various activities of daily living, like driving, to find out if you have the capacity to perform various tasks regularly and reliably.
Since you know that questions about your driving will be asked, you should prepare with your lawyer about how to best answer. I advise my clients to answer very specifically and avoid generalities like "not very much" or "only when I have to." I also advise my clients to keep a log during the 6 to 12 months prior to their hearing so we can offer written proof about driving capacity.
I also advise my clients that judges expect that a disability claimant will drive only when necessary - such as traveling to the doctor, pharmacy or grocery. If you testify that you regularly drive carpool, or that you have driven or ridden in a car for hours at a time could raise questions in the judge's mind about the seriousness of your medical condition.
