Installation view of Descension in the exhibition "Rituals of Signs and Metamorphosis" at Red Brick Art Museum in 2018.
In Anish Kapoor’s installation Descension, the material transforms within a
sculpture, confuses the boundary between the spaces of the object and the viewer,
and confronts the audience with a perpetual force that pulls downward into an
unknowable depth. Descension confounds our experience of the solidity of the
ground we are standing on, confronting us with a churning force and a downward
pull into an unknowable and dark interior. It is active, continuously in a state of
process and becoming; as such it is an object that is both proto and auto-generated
- or self-made, both languages of form that Kapoor repeatedly revisits in his work.
