(1 Jan 2015) Hundreds of New Yorkers celebrated New Year's Day by bracing the January cold and taking a dip in the ocean.
In what is known as the annual "Polar Plunge", residents and visitors alike ran into the icy water at New York's Coney Island on Thursday.
The Plunge is organised by The Coney Island Polar Bear Club, the oldest winter swimming organisation in the US.
The annual event helps raise money for Camp Sunshine, a charity for children with life-threatening illnesses.
While many revellers opted for more traditional bikinis and swimsuits, some wore super hero outfits and Santa Claus costumes.
This year, Plunge participants raised 50-thousand US Dollars in donations to Camp Sunshine, according to organisers.
