Once you have decided to save the seeds from a tomato you can use this technique to clean the seeds and check for viability.
This is an easy set it and forget way to collect seeds but remember, if you want to have a tomato plant that produces similar fruits to what you grew in the previous season, you'll want to segregate tomato blossoms before they open.
Pollinators can cross pollinate from variety of tomato to another variety. If you're ok with a surprise next year then don't worry about all that work. Regardless, you can squeeze your tomato seeds onto a paper towel and they will still be usable. But this way is easier and cleaner in my opinion.
