Hey, it's Eric from wanderwitheric.com!
It's been awhile since my last upload. Sorry it took so long, but with the new year, I needed to take some time to refocus and establish my priorities moving forward.
With that said, I'm really excited to show you my recent trip to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where I explored the history of whaling! I've always been fascinated by this subject.
In an age before electricity, or even petroleum, the best way of lighting up interior spaces was with oil rendered from whale blubber. In pursuit of this commodity, captains and crew endured years-long voyages into the unknown and risked all to battle these leviathans in exchange for fortune and glory!
New Bedford was a huge global hotspot back in the heyday of that industry in the mid 1800s, and it retains many relics of that time. Foremost among them is the town's historic downtown area, which has been converted into a National Historical Park!
The main attraction is the world-class New Bedford Whaling Museum, which focuses on the science, history, and culture of whaling and the southeastern region of Massachusetts more generally.
It's really a great spot if you're interested in maritime history. If you're ever in the area, I hope you'll consider visiting. If not, live vicariously through my video, and learn about the history of the controversial practice of whaling while you're at it! Wander with me as I check out New Bedford, Massachusetts!
