In November 2019, Motorola reinvented its legendary Moto Razr clamshell as a bleeding-edge foldable smartphone – a perfect storm of nostalgia and technological experimentation that had me immediately promise to buy a Razr of my own! But as a first-generation foldable, the reborn Razr carried compromises: it was very expensive, locked to a single carrier (Verizon), and early experiences with some review devices cast doubts upon its dependability. All it took was some stiff Samsung competition – in the form of the Galaxy Z Flip clamshell – to render the Razr 2019 something of an also-ran.
That indignity is something Motorola is today able to address. The Motorola Razr 2020 (a.k.a. Motorola Razr 5G) is prettier than its predecessor, with more polish on the exterior, and substantially improved specs under the hood. The hinge has been re-worked to tone down the noise; the processor upgraded to tune up performance; and in addition to the new low-band 5G support, the entire camera assembly has been swapped out. When you factor in the slight reduction in price and *much* wider availability than the Razr 2019, the Razr of 2020 might be just what Motorola needs to recapture the foldable-clamshell segment it started.
