Alex Sobel MP Shadow Minister for Heritage and Tourism was welcomed at The Aviation Academy, Leeds Bradford Airport on Friday 23 October as part of the Colleges Week celebrations.
The visit was hosted by Anita Lall, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Quality who said, ‘We have a thriving student community here airside at Leeds Bradford Airport where we provide aviation courses from Level 1 courses through to degrees. Despite the pandemic and despite the short term downturn in the aviation industry our enrolment has been excellent, with students looking to the future turnaround in the economy. In these challenging times, we have achieved successful online teaching and have maintained minimal impact on student learning and engagement.
It’s good to have Alex Sobel MP here in Colleges Week as an acknowledgement of the important role we are increasingly playing in the local economy’.
Alex met students including Elise Warden, Aviation Level 3 student who was selected for work experience as a Leeds Ambassador, which had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
Katie Rankin from Jet2 Interim General Manager for Learning & Development and Michelle Peacock LBA Customer Experience Manager was also there in recognition of the strong ties and partnerships existing with both employers.
Nikki Chestnutt, Centre Manager said, ‘The pandemic has had little effect on The Aviation Academy. We have maintained our student numbers and have taught online where necessary with no adverse effect on student success. We are now looking forward to the upturn in the economy so all our hard-working cohort can use their aviation skills.’
At the end of his 2-hour visit, Alex said ‘It is really important that we have sites like this near to where the job opportunities are, where employers are based and where customers, like airline passengers, can interact with students.
Students get a real good quality experience and see things first hand that they may not do if the College was a long way away in a city setting.
It is a great opportunity and great to see this facility here in Yeadon.
