You can remove the tailgate from your truck in a matter of minutes. You’ll need at least one other person to help, and to have the following items ready:
- the body side plug,
- the tailgate plugs,
- and, a roll of masking or duct tape.
[text on screen] The body side plug & tailgate plugs are provided in the glove compartment.
[voice over] First, open the tailgate to a 45-degree angle. Lift up on the right side of the tailgate, lifting it off of the pivot. Without latching, rotate the tailgate to nearly closed. Then, while providing support to the tailgate, slide it slowly to the right… to remove it from the left pivot. Rest the tailgate on the bumper so that it is securely supported, and let it rest from the support cables while naturally sliding forward.
Look for the connector bracket on the rear sill, and remove it by pushing the locking tab inward. Disconnect the wiring harness by pushing on the two release tabs, and make sure the connector bracket doesn’t fall into the sill.
Tape the tailgate harness and bracket to the forward-facing surface of the tailgate. This will help prevent damage during storage or reinstallation. Connect the body side plug to the body side wiring harness and insert the bracket back into the sill. Connect the tailgate plugs to the tailgate wiring harness to ensure that the terminals do not corrode when the tailgate is stored for longer periods of time.
Raise the tailgate slightly, and remove the support cables by releasing them from the pivots. Finally, remove the tailgate from the vehicle, and store it in a safe location. Do not carry it loose in the pickup bed. Keep in mind, the backup camera will not function when the tailgate is removed.
To reattach the tailgate, rest it on the bumper, and reattach the support cables to the pivots. Remove the harness plugs, and reconnect the tailgate and body side wiring harnesses, making sure they click together. If the harness is not properly connected, the tailgate will not open. Then, reinstall the connector bracket into the sill.
With the tailgate in a more upright position, connect it to the left pivot. Next, lower the tailgate to a 45-degree angle, and connect it to the right side pivot. Your tailgate is back on, the backup camera will work, and you’re back in business.
