The Colorado River has been drying up, running through many desert states, and no longer reaching the sea, yet its one of the most iconic river in the world, starting in the Rocky Mountain National Park and carving its way through the spectacular grand canyon and then finally creating a magnificent delta just before making its way out to the gulf of California.
Throughout history the use of Colorado river water has always been an issue between the US and Mexico and also between 7 states that the river touches, currently the river supplies drinking water for one in 10 Americans and shockingly half of the rivers water nourishes nearly 90% of the nation’s winter vegetable crops, the rivers dams also supply hydro-power to nearby cities.
The constant demand means the river also faces aridification and overconsumption. This has meant for over 60 years the Colorado river has not been able to connect with the sea, this in turn has had devastating consequences for one of the most important wetlands in the world, a place where 17 million birds pass through on their migratory routes along the pacific highway, these birds, some of them endangered, could no longer use this lush paradise in the middle of the Sonoran desert and without the Colorado's river water flowing through, the land quickly turned totally dry and barren.
Finally this is starting to turn around thanks to a monumental agreement which has granted the first ever water rights to the environment, now water is flowing once again in the delta, turning this dusty desert back into an oasis, 300,000 native tress were planted and the forest was flooded, attracting hundreds and thousands of birds to flock back to make the delta their home once again
In this video we going to show how this incredible transformation has brought together several organizations to create 3 restoration sites, one at the estuary where the river meets the sea, a riparian forest, and a laguna.
This is without a doubt one of the most important restoration projects that has taken place in North America, millions of species and our own human survival hang in the balance and we’re going to show you how its been made possible.
Thanks to Raise The River and its partners for making this awesome restoration happen!
