Need for 150-250KM Rocket for MLRS
When we talk about the Multiple Launch Rocket System i.e. MLRS the immediate question comes in mind is that why Indian Defence planners are not looking for beyond 100+ range rockets. In the present capability the indigenous Pinaka MLRS can fire Guided Pinaka rockets having range of 75 km still not enough considering the long-range artillery PHL-16 of PLA Army. Recently we have also reported that the development of Pralay is to bridge the gap of short range tactical ballistic missile having a range 350 to 500km and a much cheaper option than BrahMos and at the same time capable of carrying more warhead. But still there is huge operational gap between 75KM guided Pinaka and 350+KM Pralay. Therefore, India needs a rocket in mid-segment which has operational range between 150-250KM.
South Block to soon approve the project for MLRS
Last month, MoD has given approvals to tri-services for quick procurement of weapons and equipment up to ₹300 crore per order, with deliveries to be ensured within a year timeline. As per reports from Economics Times, there are several dozen projects which are under discussion, with the private sector set to deliver a variety of weapons including swarm drones, long-range rockets, next generation mines, armed unmanned aerial vehicles and artificial intelligence-enabled systems.
Can EEL deliver 150KM range Pinaka?
The enhanced Pinaka rockets have a range of over 45 kilometres, up from older variants that could reach around 35 kilometres. The rockets were developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
Last month, nearly 120 Enhanced range Pinaka rockets were test-fired at Balasore and Pokhran over couple of weeks, with munitions manufactured by Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) meeting all user requirements. Rockets made by state- owned Munitions India Limited (MIL) too passed the trials. The Army is now likely to go ahead with the procurement of these indigenous rockets, with the order being divided between EEL and MIL. The enhanced Pinakas have a range of over 45 km, up from legacy rockets that can strike targets at a range of 37 km.
Besides, Pinaka EEL has got technology from DRDO or over a dozen items, ranging from grenades to propellants for BrahMos Missile. It had also bagged order for the supply of 10 lakh multimodal hand grenades for the Army which was designed by DRDO.
Overall EEL has gained significant amount of experience in the production and explosives required for various weapons including rockets, missiles & grenades.
Possible design of 150KM range of Pinaka
The 150KM range Pinaka rockets are most likely to be the scaled-up version of Guided Pinaka with much larger dimensions.
The extra range can be achieved in Pinaka rocket by the use of canards with bigger control surfaces. The guided pinaka having range of 75K is based on Pinaka MK-II having the range of 60KM. Guided Pinaka is configured using propulsion system developed for Pinaka Mk-II rocket. It makes use of the aerodynamic force for canard control to improve accuracy and increase the range. This is achieved by integrating a Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) kit with the rocket in its ogive portion. 2-3 guided Pinaka missiles are required for achieving a kill probability of 99% against a single target.
The 150KM rocket will derive most of its technologies from guided Pinaka including navigation system but is expected to have bigger dimension, propulsion and warhead. In order to use same launch platform, the number of rockets that can be integrated with PODs might have to be reduced and hence will need separate POD. The pods developed for Pinaka Mk-I, Mk-II and Mk-I (Enhanced) are same and can carry 6 rockets whereas, pod of guided Pinaka carries 4 rockets. All these rockets can be fired from same Pinaka launcher. The launcher tubes developed for these rocket pods are disposable/one time use.
