Thousands of Israeli pro-democracy protesters blocked roads and surrounded the army headquarters during a “day of disruption” as the Knesset prepared for a vote downgrading the Supreme Court’s powers to review political decision-making.
The latest protests against Binyamin Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul began early on Tuesday with attempts to block major motorways and a break-in to the Tel Aviv stock exchange, where demonstrators threw fake shekel notes on the trading floor and shouted: “We are here to save the economy as well!”
Three marches in Tel Aviv converged on the headquarters of the army, while others targeted the offices of the state rabbinate, highlighting plans to expand the powers of rabbinical courts to adjudicate in civil matters and a bill that would strip municipal rabbis of their independence.
