Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Arabian Crown Prince, first revealed designs for The Line, a futuristic-looking city, in 2021.
It is a component of NEOM, the Kingdoms brand-new, massive development project, that will cover 26,000 square kilometers of desert.
The Line is advertised as a cutting-edge eco-city with no streets, cars, or carbon emissions, located north of the Red Sea.
More than 9 million homes will be built, according to the Saudi government.
And according to leaked documents, pretty much everything has been suggested in this
project, like robot maids, a man-made moon and flying automobiles inside of the building.
This is Dubai on steroids.
It appears to be something from science fiction, and I believe that is the goal.
Before anything else, it is a significant and impressive PR and marketing effort.
The goal is not to make an impression.
To be magnificent in the truest sense, that is the goal.
An important question is, why do we need to establish such a city?
Why is it necessary to use those resources for that type of project?
And why does the city require such an appearance?
The entire NEOM development is meant to be so self-sufficient.
That it is referred to as a country within a country, and its citizens are reportedly going to be called Neom-ians rather than Saudis.
It is well known that Saudi Arabia has been working to reposition itself on the international
scene, and is looking to the United Emirates, as a model for a post oil economy.
The Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 plan, which essentially states that Saudi Arabia would appear
drastically altered by the end of this decade, is being realized.
It won't be an oil dependent kingdom in the future.
And a significant part of that plan involves real estate.
The line will be 170 kilometers long, 500 meters tall, and stunningly, just 200 meters wide.
The outer shell will be in mirroring glass, and a 20-minute end-to-end commute for the
residents, will be provided by a high-speed hyperloop, which will eliminate the need for automobiles and roads.
A five-minute walk will be required to reach every amenity, including homes, public parks, schools, and offices.
Parks and natural areas will be reachable from any location in the city in just two minutes.
This completely smashes the notion of the so called 15-minute city.
According to NEOM, the entire city will be run entirely on renewable energy, and because of
the developments small physical footprint, 95% of the land will be left exactly as it is.
This is a far cry from the urban expansion of contemporary cities, which have grown to the size of small countries.
But there is little known, about the city itself, aside the dreamy video trailers and glossy animations.
Some of it is currently so beyond our comprehension, because it presents many engineering
issues, that even the most accomplished engineers in the world, arent really sure how to accomplish.
To account for the curvature of the earth, they must figure out how to have a break in the structure. These are not issues that any contemporary structure has ever encountered before.
Mohammed bin Salman wanted to create something that was as impressive as the Giza
Pyramids, in terms of the wow factor, and with this structure, it will be a reality.
