MATMATA Tunisia is a small Berber speaking town in southern Tunisia. Some of the local Berber residents live in traditional underground "TROGLOLYTE" structures.

The structures typical for the village are created by digging a large pit in the ground. Around the perimeter of this pit artificial caves are then dug to be used as rooms, with some homes comprising multiple pits, connected by trench-like passageways.

Tataouine is a city in southern Tunisia. The below-ground "cave dwellings" of the native Berber population, designed for coolness and protection, render the city and the area around it as a tourist and film makers' attraction and the town was chosen as a filming location for exterior scenes of the desert planet in the Star Wars film series.
