The Ethiopian train is the oldest and most dangerous in the world, running from the city of Dire Dawa to the border of Djibouti. It is the only connection between the most remote villages and covers 310 kilometers in more than 10 hours if everything goes well, stopping in every village like an omnibus. Despite frequent derailments, it is the cheapest mode of transport in Ethiopia, offering a necessary alternative to expensive planes and non-functioning trains in a country that has been hardest hit by fatal road accidents.
