Composed between 1919 and 1922, Medtner’s eight Forgotten Melodies, Op. 38, are each given an evocative title. Unfolding in a dreamy stream of consciousness, the first piece, the ‘Sonata reminiscenza’, was completed in 1920 and lives up to its nostalgic title with music of delicate introspection, perhaps reflecting the composer’s personal challenges and imminent departure from his homeland following the Bolshevik Revolution, with which he was not sympathetic. This movement’s opening theme was used by Medtner to unify the other Forgotten Melodies, most explicitly in the concluding ‘Alla reminiscenza’.
