This will be a series on how to build and assemble a LS engine, including pre-assembly. This is Part 1 that covers pre-assembly of the bottom-end, or crankshaft and main caps. We show you how to use Plastigage to verify and confirm that the bearings are withing the tolerance limits. Too tight and you risk siezing, while too much clearance will lead to rod and main knocks as well as low oil pressure.
We were trying to determine if we would be able to reuse our existing bearings. In the end, our plastigage confirmed that 300,000 mile bearings were still well within the serviceable limits. Back in they're going.
Stay tuned as we'll bring a new video on the assembly each week. Part 2 will include lubricating and installing the crankshaft, for good. We'll also ensure crankshaft endplay is within spec as well.
