"Debet" tells about the great and elder blacksmith Nart Debet, a song from the Nart Saga. Vasily Abaev, Ossetian Soviet linguist, suggested a Mongolian origin of nar, from Mongolian nara "sun", ultimately from Proto-Altaic: *ŋḕrá ("day, sun, light"). In Chechen the word nart means "giant". The central hero of the saga is the woman Satana. As it has been narrated in Karachay-Balkar Nart epos, Satanay Biyche is the daughter of the sun and the moon. Her father is the sun and her mother is the moon.
There is a clue about the meaning of her name in Karachay-Balkar Alan variants of Nart epos. While she was a little child, a witch has brought up her in a desolate island. Satanay has liked to play with coral stones in this island. The witch has seen that and has decided to name her as Satanay which has meant “little coral stone” (Aliyeva 1994: 299). In Divanu Lugatit Turk of Mahmud Kashgari we can find the same Turkic word “sata” which means coral (Atalay 1986: 496).
In Nart epos there is an extraordinary character which is known as “The Leader of Narts”. His name is Wuerzemec, who is the son of the Goddess of Sea in Adige Nart epos (Özbay 1990: 150). He is known as Wrijmeg, the son of Nart hero Ihsharteg in Osset Nart epos (Dumezil 2005: 34). His mother is the Goddess of Sea just like in Adige variant. In Karachay-Balkar Nart epos the leader of Narts is Örüzmek who has born from a comet which has fallen to the world. He has grown up in seven days with the milk of a wolf (Aliyeva 1994: 74). The name of Wuerzemec ~Wrijmeg~ Örüzmek reminds us the name of Uruz Beg, the son of Salur Kazan in Dede Korkut.
Those motifs of Nart epos are more connected to Dede Korkut and Oguzname than Homeros’ Odysseia.

The Karachay-Balkars (Alans) are a Turkic people of the Caucasus region who descended from the Turkic-speaking Alans. They have historical ties in the Caucasus since at least 6000 years. Their Karachay-Balkar language is of the Ponto-Caspian subgroup of the Northwestern (Kipchak) group of Turkic languages and has the oldest lexical stratum of the whole Turkic group.

Alijev, former professor of History and Philology at the Karachay-Balkar State University, in his work (1972: p.13) Karachay-Balkar in reference to its grammatical forms, vocabulary and phonetics is older than other Turkic languages since in the past it was isolated from them and therefore it preserved some old features.
Montclair State University professor H. Mark Hubey (1998) adds that ... "The common Turkic branch which includes all the rest can be split into the /c/j/y/ branch and the /x/ġ/w/ branches. Seeing that the 't' to 's' transition is already in Sumerian, and that the Uralic 't' to 's' shift is thought to have occurred 6,000 years ago, we can be reasonably sure that some of the words traced out here certainly belong to quite an ancient age and to the west. This means that the proto-Turks or at least one of their ancestors moved from the Euphrates area north through the Caucasus and then to the steppes, and then eastwards. The historical ‘Turks’ are those moving back towards the west. Since all the branches of Turkic seem to occur in the West (Chuvash, Oguz, Kipchak, Khalaj) there is no reason to look for Turkic homelands beyond the Altays. That was their second home."
There is genetic evidence, based on haplogroup R1a Z2123, linking the Karachay-Balkars to the ancient Alans, of the kingdom of Alania (located in present-day Karachay-Balkar Alania and neighbouring states). Ancient Alania had its capital in Maghas, which some authors locate at Arkhyz, in the mountains currently inhabited by the modern Karachay-Balkar Alans. In the 14th century, Alania was destroyed by Timur and the decimated population dispersed into the mountains. Timur's incursion into the North Caucasus introduced the local nations to Islam.
