If you’re using Windows 8 on your PC or laptop, in most cases, you can update your system to Windows 8.1 for free. This update includes several improvements, for instance, Start menu button is back on Windows desktop, easier to access apps or programs, etc. And if you want to upgrade to Windows 10, you will need to update your system to Windows 8.1 first. The system requirements are nearly identical for Windows 8, but you can double check it at the link at bottom. In this video, I will show how to update your system from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 using Windows.
Note: Not all Windows 8 editions can be updated from Windows Store, check the link at bottom for more information.
There are few things that you should do before proceed updating your system to Windows 8.1.
1. If you have program that customizes Start menu, for example, Classic Shell, I recommended to uninstall it as it may conflict while updating system. You can install it after the update if you want.
2. Backup your files. You can use File History to backup files and documents to other disk.
3. Download and install latest updates from Windows update.
4. Temporary disable third-party anti-virus software before updating. You don’t need to turn off Windows Defender as it is anti-virus from Microsoft itself.
Now you can begin by access Windows Store and you see the option to upgrade your system to Windows 8.1 which you can follow guide in this video. After finishes updating, turn on anti-virus back and check if your system and program are work properly. If everything works fine, you might want to delete “Windows.old” folder which contain files of the previous Windows and the temporary installation files using Disk Cleanup.
