In 2011, American photographer Michael Somoroff directed a series of "short shorts" of the Latinx author Giannina Braschi reading from her postmodern tragic comedy, "United States of Banana" about the fall of the American empire and the liberation of Puerto Rico. This snippet shows the author talking about her creative process.
"United States of Banana" has also been adapted into a theater play by Juan Pablo Felix, a series of carved wood-panel reliefs by artist Michael Zansky, and a graphic novel by Joakim Lindengren. "It's what I call superb writing. The work is a geopolitical tragic comedy. "It's as much a performance piece as it is a novel. I'd like to stage it," said Barney Rosset of The Evergreen Review.
Michael Somoroff's photography projects include "Absence of Subject" on the holocaust (2011), light cycles in the Rothko Chapel, and "Two Crowns of the Egg" with Giannina Braschi.
