The passenger cruise ship "Tikhiy Don" was built in 1977 in Germany according to project 301. This is a series of 27 four-deck motor ships built from 1975 to 1983 at the VEB Elbewerfen Boizenburg shipyard (Boyzenburg, Germany) by order of the Ministry of the River Fleet of the RSFSR for operation on inland waterways.
After the construction, the ship was named after the epic novel in four volumes "Quiet Flows the Don" ("the Silent Don", "and Quiet Flows The Don"), written by Mikhail Sholokhov in 1925-1940. For this novel, in 1965, Sholokhov was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature with the wording "For the artistic power and integrity of the epic about the Don Cossacks at a turning point for Russia."
The ship entered the Volga-Don River Shipping Company, where it was assigned to Rostov-on-Don. Until 1991, inclusive, the ship operated on flights from Rostov-on-Don to Moscow and other cities. From 1992 to 2001, the Quiet Don was in the city of Sassnitz (Germany), where the ship arrived for repairs, along with another motor ship of the Volga-Don River Shipping Company - Novikov-Priboy, and then was used there as a floating hotel.
In the autumn of 2001, the ship returned to Russia to a new owner, which was the Moscow River Shipping Company (Moscow). Then, from 2002 to 2004 inclusive, the ship operated cruises from Moscow to St. Petersburg from the operator Mosturflot. In the internavigation period 2004-2005. the ship underwent repairs and re-equipment in Romania, after which it began work from the Grand Circle Cruise Line cruise company, making flights with foreign tourists from Moscow to St. Petersburg. In 2009, the ship operated in Samara, on lease from the Samara Travels company, but from 2010 to 2014 inclusive, it again worked with foreign tourists on flights between the two capitals from the Grand Circle Cruise Line.
On August 1, 2014, the Quiet Don was decommissioned due to lack of loading and did not go into operation in 2015-2016. In July 2016, the ship was sold from the Grand Circle Cruise Line to Doninturflot, in August it was ferried from Moscow to Rostov-on-Don, where it was modernized in the off-season of 2016-2017, and since 2017 it again began to make cruises with foreign tourists on the Moscow-St. Petersburg line, but from Doninturflot.
