Leaders of the Group of 20 major economies have called for “comprehensive” ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, while also stressing the need for cooperation on climate change, poverty reduction, and taxing the ultrarich.
In a joint statement on Monday night, the G20 reaffirmed the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, as well as the outcome from the 2023 Global Stocktake. It also sent positive signals on the energy transition and the need to scale up renewable energy and improve energy efficiency, but failed to ignite action against fossil fuels — critical as the world hurtles towards unprecedented warming.

UN chief urges G20 ’leadership’ on stalled climate talks. There are reports from AFP that the UN secretary general António Guterres yesterday called on the G20 leaders who are gathering in Rio de Janeiro to rescue the stalled concurrent UN climate talks in Azerbaijan by showing “leadership” on cutting emissions.
“A successful outcome at Cop29 is still within reach, but it will require leadership and compromise, namely from the G20 countries,” Guterres, who will attend the summit of the world’s biggest economies starting Monday, told a press conference in Rio.
