STORYLINE:
Intensifying its operations around Gaza City, Israel ordered two airstrikes Saturday evening on an outlying neighbourhood.
The military was investigating whether one of the strikes, which it said was aimed at militants, hit a house, killing a mother and two of her children, including a six-year-old girl.
Four other family members were wounded.
The second airstrike, near a mosque in the same neighbourhood, wounded four people including a man identified as a militant.
The wounded were taken to hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, Palestinian witnesses said Israeli tanks began moving back into an abandoned Israeli settlement in northern Gaza early Sunday, a day after pulling back.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment.
Israeli forces had withdrawn Saturday from northern Gaza after an intensive two-day operation aimed at creating a buffer zone to stop Palestinian militants from firing rockets at Israel.
