STORYLINE:
A British woman convicted of trafficking Thai women and forcing them into prostitution has been arrested five years after fleeing to Thailand to avoid going to prison in England, police said Monday.
Fifty-year-old Angela Miller, who holds both British and Thai citizenship, was arrested in England in July 2000, for trafficking women and forcing them to work as prostitutes at two brothels in Leicester and Northampton, said police Major General Wuthi Liptapallop, deputy commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau.
The women were forced to work as prostitutes between January 1, 1991 until November 28, 1998, in order to pay back Miller and her husband, Ronald Miller, for helping them get to England, said a Thai police news release, citing information from British documents.
The statement said that Miller confessed to the charges and was temporarily released from prison in England.
She failed to appear in court to hear her verdict on September 18, 2000. The court sentenced her in absentia to 3 years and 6 months in prison.
She arrived at Thailand in August 2001, police said.
British authorities requested the arrest of Miller, previously known by the Thai name Onchira Chitprasert, for extradition to England to face her jail sentence.
Although she can be prosecuted under Thai law, Thailand's Cabinet decided in March 2004 that she could be extradited to face her sentence in Britain.
Thai police arrested Miller on Thursday at a bar called The Office Girl, which Miller was operating in Chonburi province, 45 miles (70 kilometres) south of Bangkok.
She will face a trial for extradition to England.
