British transport secretary Grant Shapps and deputy chief medical officer for England Dr. Jenny Harries held a briefing on Saturday, delivering an update in London on the coronavirus outbreak in the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom's death toll from confirmed cases of COVID-19 rose by 282 to 36,675, the government said.
Shapps faced questions from reporters regarding whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson knew of his top adviser Dominic Cummings making a 400 km journey amid lockdown measures in March, which would mean a breach in lockdown rules. When asked if the prime minister knew of Cummings' trip, the transport secretary said that the important thing is that everyone remains in the same place while they are in lockdown.
Cummings made the trip to northern England while his wife showed COVID-19 symptoms.
The briefing came a day after Interior Minister Priti Patel said Britain will introduce a 14-day COVID-19 quarantine for travellers arriving from abroad from June 8, a measure that airlines have warned will devastate their industry.
